Book Club Info Graphinc

One of the primary reasons we started this organization was to build empathy in the next generation of helpers and volunteering is only one of the ways in which we are addressing this goal.

Since 2017, we have partnered with local bookstore BookPeople and Bookopolis, an online kids’ book recommendation site, to host a book club for 3rd-8th graders. The books we select will tackle issues that our children face every day--from struggles in school to bullying to learning to love and accept themselves and others just as they are.

Some of the books we discuss contain heavier topics. We recommend parents read the book’s summary and explore reviews from sites like Bookopolis and Common Sense Media to make sure it’s a good fit for your child.

Meetings are held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 1-2pm in the 2nd floor Kids' Amphitheater at BookPeople. We discuss the book and work on a volunteer activity benefitting one of Austin Allies’ nonprofit partners.

We can’t wait to see you at Book Club!

For the month of August we will have 2 options - Wings of Fire by Tui T. Sutherland and The Unwanteds by Lisa McMann.

In "Wings of Fire Graphic Novel #1: The Dragonet Prophecy" five dragonets are hidden away under a mountain, raised by the Talons of Peace, to fulfill a prophecy and end the war between the dragon tribes. They escape their mountain home, encountering danger and learning about the conflict firsthand, ultimately choosing freedom over their predetermined destiny.

Recommended for 3rd-7th grade readers. Read summary reviews from young readers here.

In Lisa McMann's "The Unwanteds," thirteen-year-olds in the dystopian land of Quill are sorted into Wanteds, Necessaries, and Unwanteds. Those deemed Unwanted are sent to a supposed death farm, but instead, they discover a magical sanctuary called Artimé, where creativity is celebrated and magic is learned through artistic expression.
