One primary goal of starting Austin Allies was building empathy in the next generation of helpers, and volunteering is only one of the ways we pursue this mission.
We love that great books allow us to step into the shoes of others. So, in 2017, we launched a book club with Austin bookstore BookPeople to foster a love of reading while exploring stories from a broad variety of perspectives and experiences.
We read books for kids in grades 5-8 and some may address heavier topics—from friendship challenges and mental health to war and displacement. Because we know that not every book is right for every reader, we recommend parents explore reviews from sites like Common Sense Media to ensure each month’s pick is a good fit for your child.
We meet the second Sunday of each month from 1-2pm in BookPeople’s 2nd floor Kids' Amphitheater. We will discuss the book, showcase upcoming volunteer opportunities, and occasionally work on a project for one of Austin Allies’ nonprofit partners.
We can’t wait to see you!
Note: Book club picks are 10% off at BookPeople during the month of the discussion! If shopping online, include the coupon code BOOKCLUB at checkout.

Update
Hi Book Clubbers,
We are heartbroken to announce the loss of our dear friend, Book Club host, and Mayor of Bookopolis, Kari Riedel.
She was a tireless champion of literacy for all ages and we will miss her tremendously.
With love to you all,
Erika
